(Holiday) Party Time

So this is a fact: I've never been to a company holiday party. At my last job, I just couldn't see a reason to spend any more time with my co-workers than I had to, and at my current job, I missed last year's party because I was sick. This year, even though I've already taken the party as a reason to buy a pair of shoes and a makeup bag I intend to use as a clutch, it seems like travel for work and some personal/family commitments will keep me from attending once again. Sigh.

I have to admit though - you see what I did there, in regards to the shoes and the clutch? I really enjoy these more as occasions to add a few things I need/want to my closet, and I also enjoy getting dressed up. Sure, the standard holiday party dress is fine, but if you play your cards right and with some creativity you can use pieces from your holiday party outfit all through the year.

So with that, here are a few outfits I've thought of using pieces that I know I'd be happy to wear in January and beyond. Since these are all outfits I was actually considering, I tried to keep it relatively affordable too.

Zara Blazer and Trousers
These
Top - River Island (sold out but similar here), Clutch - Asos, Shoes - Sam Edelman, Lipstick - Paul and Joe

I don't know about you, but I would be so happy to get this tartan Zara suit in my closet. I'm really into suit sets right - they're really sophisticated in an old school way, but this one has a print that makes it modern, edgy, and fun. The nice thing is you can break up the pieces and make countless outfits with them, both casual and for work. The bow-tie top compliments the look in a very Alexa Chung sort of way, though I'd prefer a bejeweled one to give the outfit some extra festivity. The suit is a bit androgynous looking though, and you don't want to look too stuffy for a work party because the key word is party. Hence I added some fun pink pumps, an embellished clutch, and pink lipstick to feminize the look. The pink pumps with matching pink lipstick look very Mandy Moore circa last fashion week, no? All together this look is very J. Crew in my opinion.

Dress - Asos, Shoes - Asos

So should you want to wear a sparkly dress, I endorse this long sleeved number from Asos. It reminds me of Jessica Rabbit but thanks to the sleeves its a little more modest...until you get to that bare back. Subtly sexy, I'd say. And subtle sexy always wins over in-your-face sexy. Nicole Warne  it in green here.

Shoes are usually pricier pieces in outfits, so I decided to pair this dress with these nearly flat red slingbacks. It's unexpected and that's refreshing, but they still manage to work together thanks to the color coordination and gold heel, which make the shoes a tad formal...at least formal enough to wear with this dress. And yeah, black pumps work too, of course!

peplum top
Peplum top - TopShop, Leather skirt - Milly (cheaper at Asos here), Shoes - Zara, Quilted bag - Dorothy Perkins

Do you have a leather skirt? I do, and I love it, but if I didn't, I'd be looking for any excuse to get an A-line version into my closet, stat. Consider it just a little black skirt in a fun material and wear it accordingly. Another thing I am coveting as of late are these amazing Zara studded flats, also with a slight heel. I have always wanted to try a peplum top over an A-line skirt...I feel like it would make for a unique shape. The basic black with those ka-pow! shoes mean that you can afford to dress it up a little with jewelry, but you shouldn't go overboard.

Old Stuff

I stumbled upon these old, old photos of some sold work outfits from my last job and I thought I'd share since I don't have a real outfit post for today. I wasn't that into my last job and the attire was very standard office garb - black pants, black flats (couldn't be bothered to wear heels), and some sort of nice -ish blouse. I'd end up wearing jeans pretty frequently too. I felt pretty blah.

So I invented Formal Mondays (as opposed to Casual Fridays) in which I'd get dressed up and look nice. I was the only one who participated of course. So anyway, here are two old Formal Monday outfits. These pieces are now so past season I don't even think it's worth mentioning where they're from but correct me if I'm wrong!

What I'd Like to Be Wearing: Oxblood Lipstick

Oxblood Lipstick

Sweater - Jardin Des Orangers, Skirt - Proenza Schouler, Houndstooth tights - Jones New York, Sandals - Opening Ceremony, Necklace - Gorjana, Bag - Givenchy "Nightingale", Lipstick - Burberry

Okay, okay, I admit it. I've fallen for the oxblood trend just like the rest of the word, and dammit, I want some burgundy lipstick.

Music Monday....Errr, Not Music

Okay, so NOT music, but this segment from Jimmy Kimmel of celebrities reading men tweets directed at them is muther effing hilarious. I think my favorites are for Katy Perry, Snooki, and Justin Bieber. I don't actually mind any of these people that much, but the Justin Bieber one is priceless...because I'd make that trade off just because I miss that person so much!

Currently Coveting: Zara Studded Flats

Zara

Words can't describe how much I love these Zara flats. They embody so many quality I love in fashion - studs, gaudy gold, an ankle strap, and a very Alexa Chung chunky kitten heel.

074: Be The Person You Aspire To Be

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
Striped sweater - Timing, Pencil skirt and orange collared shirt - vintage, Boots - Ugg "Sofia," Embossed tote - Ted Baker, Sunglasses - Chloe 2145, Necklace - Gorjana c/o

When I first started working at my current company, I loved fashion, but I was deathly afraid of colors. I mostly wore shades of gray, cream, tan, and then stark black and white. On occasion I would wear color, but more often than not they were muted tones, regardless of the season. As I started to study fashion more for the sake of my work, I started to challenge myself to get outside of my clothing comfort zone. Look at me now, ma! The color blocking trend is long, long dead but, you know what? I loved it. And I still do, so I'm rocking it like its going of of style (ha, horrible pun, I'm sorry!).

(edited - sorry guys, got too personal with this post!)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Real post coming tomorrow, but in the meantime, I just wanted to wish you, whoever you are, a really wonderful Thanksgiving. Looking back on the last year, I have so, so, so much to be thankful for. I feel great and I'm really happy today. I really hope you're having a great day and are happy too.

Music Monday: Primitive

Did you like the Ambulance Ltd song I posted last week? Well, here's another one, so you can enjoy them again (assuming you can forgive them for those horrible jeans)...and ogle the dreamy lead singer ;)

Current Obsessions: Doorknocker Earrings

Asos

Asos

I've always been a statement necklace kind of girl, but lately I've noticed my style has been shifting, at least when it comes to jewelry. I've been favoring daintier pendants around my neck, much like everything Gorjana produces.

On top of that, I recently found out my hair god of a hairdresser left his salon for another one that is a bit more expensive and much farther from my house. I'm having trouble finding someone new, so at this time I'm considering just trying to go to him less to balance out how much its going to cost me to get my hair done. That means I'm going to have to purposefully get my hair to that "awkward length" before I can cut it off.

Fortunately for me, I always tell my hair dresser to give me a cut that will last me a while and "grow out well," so my hair doesn't look bad right now, and hopefully its "awkward stage" isn't that awkward when it gets there. As it gets long enough to tie into a tiny bun or to pin up somehow, I think I'm going to move onto obnoxious doorknocker earrings to feminize and stylize my look. They remind me of Lana Del Rey's seedy 60s glamour look...and what's not to love about that? These beauties are all from Asos, but I might have to check H&M out too.

072: Winter White Suit

Photobucket
Pants - Asos, Blazer - Zara (similar here), Peplum top - American Rag (similar here), Necklace - ABS by Allan Shawartz (not the same but love this), Floral heels - H&M, Sunglasses case worn as clutch - Tory Burch, Sunglasses - Chloe 2145 (similar here and here)

This white suit is one of my best creations...and what I mean is that both pieces match each other perfectly and they came from totally different stores. Pretty proud of myself.

Anyway, I wore this to a party at my work last week. I have trouble finding dresses I like for formal events, so I usually end up wearing some sort of separates.

What I'd Like to Be Wearing: Black, Navy, and Gold

Black, Navy, and Gold

I endorse navy and black together. Yes.

071: A Little Neon

Photobucket Photobucket
Neon necklace - Crossroads (love this too), Mustard cropped sweater - H&M (similar here), Midi skirt - Vintage, Socks - Urban Outfitters, Heels - Calvin Klein, Foldable Wayfarers - Ray-Ban

I got this sweet little neon number from Crossroads a couple years ago. I like to say that it was before its time just because when I bought it neon was pretty edge and it took me a long time to figure out how to wear it. Thanks to how trendy it was this past year, I got a lot of inspiration and ideas and it's got a lot more wear.

Music Monday: Ophelia

Do you guys remember Ambulance LTD? They were a five person band out of New York's Spanish Harlem. They released their first album, called simply LP, in 2004 and though sales weren't huge, anyone who knew of it proclaimed it a fantastic album. I think some of their songs charted in the UK and they even did an appearance on Jay Leno, but that was really the most of their success, and it wasn't too long after until all band members, including the founders and lead singers, left the band. It was sad, because Ambulance really had a new sound. It was a mix of the Beatles, beach-y rock, and the shoe-gaze movement, in my opinion.

Anyway, even though they're long gone, give this song a spin and if you like it, you can still find the album, which is a certainly a beautiful musical masterpiece.

070: Don't

Photobucket Photobucket
Sheer shirt - American Apparel, Socks - Urban Outfitters, Heels - Calvin Klein, Plaid pants - Daughters of the Revolution, Sunglasses - Ray-ban foldable wayfarers

Remember when it wasn't okay to wear two patterns at once? Or it wasn't okay to wear blue and black?    I love when fashion breaks its own rules.

What I'd Like to Be Wearing: Dolce & Gabbana

A girl can dream

Dress - Dolce & Gabbana, Shoes - Pied A Terre, Eyeshadow - Stila "jewel eye", Headband - Eddera, Clutch - Karen Millen, Lipstick - Armani

Today we're holding a shopping party at my work. This dress is $26,000. A girl can dream, right?

069: Ulyana Wannabe

Photobucket Photobucket
Sweatshirt top - 213 Industries by Michelle Kim (similarish here and here), Belt - vintage (my roommate's but love this and this!), Cobalt maxi Skirt - Gap (similar here), Boots - Uggs, Sunnies - Chloe 2145 (similar here and here)

In order to get this extra pouffy effect in my skirt, I actually had to wear another more structured, flared skirt underneath it. I know that some days I dress like this and other days I dress like this, but one of my various personalities seems to like extremely girly looks, and this one in particular is styled by one of the four part Russian Fashion pack, Ulyana Sergeenko. She's a former model, clothing designer, and wife of some rich and powerful dude in Russian, and I love that she has such a distinct sense of style. She is seemingly untouched by trends, unlike her buddies, and yet the fashion world still adores her.

Anyway, if you're interested in seeing her style and her designs, here's a great post on her.

Oh, and this is the outfit I wore last week when I met Kathleen for pumpkin-flavored treats and some shopping, hehe. You know those days when you wake up and the sky's all gray and it seems like it's going to be cold so you throw on you (cute, heeled) Ugg boots and a (cute, tailored) sweatshirt? This was that day. And it turned out to be like 80. I refuse to check the weather report as I get ready for work, and I'm not sure why that is. There were some matching gray socks involved too, which made the outfit much more cohesive in my opinion, but I couldn't find them upon photographing this.

Music Monday: Nye Nummer Et

I went to see Daughter preform last Monday at the Independent and actually ended up falling in love with the opening act, Choir of Young Believers. True, as an opening act their set was way too long (one hour!), especially next to Daughter's act, which was less than that. But the truth is, they were so good, even though they overstayed their welcome. They're from Copenhagen and dressed a lot like Jayinee's boyfriend, and their sound isn't neatly categorized into the modern genres of popular rock, which I like a lot - they have their own sound! As my friend Sarah described it, it mostly sounds like spiritual mystic rock with a bit of 80s and a hint of early 90s. Anyway, why are you still reading? Listen!!!

Current Obession: Fuchsia

I came to the realization that my obsession with fuchsia needed to be documented as a current obsession. I've been using the color a lot in my What I'd Like to be Wearing posts, and well, I don't know why, but I want to wear it right no so badly. I think it has to do with how fresh it looks next to camel and black, which are both fall and winter staples...and obviously it'll transfer over to spring really well too. Right now I'm looking for a pair of soft wide legged fuchsia trousers and a full midi skirt. Fingers crossed that some store answers my prayer! I can't say I don't love all the oxblood in stores right now, but geez, can a girl get a little variety here?

On another note, I apologize for the radio silence on this end this week. The last two weeks have been crazy busy for me, and now's not that much better.
